One Voice Chorus proudly presents the story of Bayard Rustin through the newly-commissioned work, The Man Behind the Dream, by composer Steve Milloy. Rustin served as personal assistant to Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and as an organizer of the 1963 March on Washington. Some religious leaders did not want Rustin in the foreground because he was a gay man, and they believed his sexuality would hinder the progress of the Civil Rights movement. Rustin’s story is more relevant than ever, particularly against the backdrop of both Charlotte’s recent history and the unrest sweeping the nation. One Voice is honored to perform the Southeastern premiere of this work, and to tell this powerful and important story.
