Holiday Concert Draws & Delights Crowd

December 2013 | This year’s holiday offering from One Voice-the Naughty & Nice concert-definitely delivered on both counts! Featuring both traditional and not-so-traditional Christmas fare, the performance touched audience members’ hearts and funny bones.

Record crowd on and off stage

Speaking of audience members, more than 600 people came to the holiday concert ready to enjoy our mix of seasonal standards and irreverent surprises—a turnout mirrored by the record number of singers taking the stage for this year’s concert!

The “niceties” of the performance featured holiday favorites “Joy to the World,” “I Wonder as I Wander,” “Silent Night” and “Let There Be Peace on Earth.” The “naughty” touches included, among other things, odes to The Grinch, a send up of the viral Internet video “Aint Nobody Got Time for That” and two original compositions by One Voice artistic Director Gerald Gurss: “Very Merry North Carolina Christmas” and “Michelle Bachman’s Lament.”

“Very Merry North Carolina Christmas” asks Santa to return some rights people lost this year thanks to the state legislature. In “Michelle Bachman’s Lament” &helip; well, perhaps you just had to be there (wink!).

“… a wall of joyous sound.”

Afterward, singers and concert goers mingled at the reception, sponsored by Just Fresh. Said one concert-goer, “For me, this was one of the best One Voice holiday shows yet! I really enjoyed the number of traditional, familiar Christmas songs, but you were still able to mix it up some.”

Said another audience member, “When so many singers poured out to surround the room for the opening number, I was blown away! That “Joy to the World” was like a wall of joyous sound.”

Thank you to all who came to the concert! Thanks also to the show’s sponsors Scorpio and The Arts & Science Council.

Here’s a clip from one of our naughtier numbers. (We promise it’s PG. Just not very PC.)
