SUMMARY:the man behind the DREAM
DESCRIPTION:One Voice Chorus proudly presents the story of Bayard Rustin through the newly-commissioned work\, The Man Behind the Dream\, by composer Steve Milloy. Rustin served as personal assistant to Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King\, Jr.\, and as an organizer of the 1963 March on Washington. Some religious leaders did not want Rustin in the foreground because he was a gay man\, and they believed his sexuality would hinder the progress of the Civil Rights movement. Rustin’s story is more relevant than ever\, particularly against the backdrop of both Charlotte’s recent history and the unrest sweeping the nation. One Voice is honored to perform the Southeastern premiere of this work\, and to tell this powerful and important story.

DESCRIPTION:Join the acclaimed San Francisco Gay Men’s Chorus and Oakland Interfaith Gospel Choir for The Lavender Pen Tour at Ovens Auditorium in Charlotte\, NC on Sunday\, October 14\, 2017\, with special guests One Voice Chorus of Charlotte and Gay Men’s Chorus of Charlotte! \nFind Tickets: Ticket Master \nAll proceeds and donations from the Charlotte\, NC show of the Lavender Pen Tour directly benefit: \nPFLAG Charlotte\nRAIN\, Inc.\nTranscend Charlotte\nTime Out Youth Center \nFor nearly 40 years\, the San Francisco Gay Men’s Chorus (SFGMC) has served as an international standard-bearer for a powerful mix of extraordinary musical excellence and mission-driven activism. Founded in 1978\, it was the first choral organization to courageously proclaim its orientation in its name and is credited with helping start the LGBT choral movement that now spans the entire globe\, galvanizing and changing the course of LGBT history. \nIt continues to inspire other arts-based community organizations through its performances and involvement in human rights\, community activism\, empowerment and inclusiveness\, establishing it as an icon among LGBT organizations. \nThis fall\, SFGMC will kick off its 40th Season by embarking on a tour of southern states — states that have major discriminatory laws aimed at the LGBTQ+ community. It is the Chorus’ hope that the music will encourage LGBTQ+ people and allies to come together\, provoke conversations and action around civil liberties for all\, while raising much-needed funds for local LGBTQ+ organizations\, so they can continue doing their vital work to dismantle these biased and discriminatory laws. \nIt is the Chorus’ intention to have the tour fully underwritten so that all monies raised stay in the respective communities. SUMMARY:Holiday Concert Rehearsal
DESCRIPTION:One Voice is a non-auditioned chorus. Anyone who wishes to come sing is welcome. We do however\, have an auditioned chamber choir ‘Sotto Voce\,’ which does a lot of our run-out performances. \nThe chorus sings all repertoire: LGBTQ-specific\, classical\, pop\, Broadway\, Eric Whitacre\, Bach\, etc. We sing 3 main-stage shows per performance season: holiday (usually the first weekend in December)\, spring (sometime in March/early April)\, and our annual summer concert: Hollywood Squares (mid June). \nWe rehearse on Tuesday evenings. Our attendance policy allows for three (3) missed rehearsals per concert cycle. If you miss more than three\, you have to sing for the Artistic Director to show you know your part. \nIf you wish to help in ways other than singing\, we also have many volunteer opportunities.

SUMMARY:Meditation and Music: Comfort for a community touched by the Orlando Pulse tragedy
DESCRIPTION:Responding to the tragedy in Orlando\, Charlotte’s two LGBTQ choruses\, the Gay Men’s Chorus of Charlotte and One Voice Chorus\, in conjunction with St. Martin’s Episcopal Church\, are hosting a service of meditation and music to be held at 6:00 PM on Wednesday\, June 15. \nThe service will include communal singing\, performances by both GMCC and One Voice Chorus’ small ensemble Sotto Voce\, brief meditations\, and times of silence for reflection. Organizers expect the service to last about 50 minutes.
