The present is a complicated place. In this concert we look to the future with hope\, while reflecting on our past struggles. In addition to interesting wintertime pieces\, and a handful of pieces from the concerts we missed\, we are also excited to perform the Southern premiere of “Amendment: Righting Our Wrongs” by Melissa Dunphy. We joined in a consortium of 11 choirs to commission this work commemorating the history of the 19th amendment\, which we would have performed in Spring of 2021. The work juxtaposes the voices of the founding fathers with the voices of minority women fighting for universal voting rights. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBy purchasing a ticket you agree to the following: \n\n\n\nTo protect everyone from COVID-19 as thoroughly as possible and still have a successful performance\, One Voice Chorus will require: \n\n\n\nProof of Vaccination OR Negative COVID test result within 72 HoursRequired for all audience members attending indoor One Voice performances\, along with matching photo ID. As it says in the lyrics of the song from which our concert takes its name\, “We travel through the darkness and through the night\, seeking light.” \n\n\n\nDuring this outdoor concert\, we will share songs with hopeful messages\, including choral favorites like Ola Gjeilo’s “Ubi Caritas” and “Wanting Memories” by Sweet Honey in the Rock\, as well as poignant new compositions like Alysia Lee’s “Say Her Name\,” and Marques A. Garrett’s “Sing Out\, My Soul.” \n\n\n\nTrexler Courtyard is located outside Trexler Student Center on the campus of Queens University. SUMMARY:the man behind the DREAM
DESCRIPTION:One Voice Chorus proudly presents the story of Bayard Rustin through the newly-commissioned work\, The Man Behind the Dream\, by composer Steve Milloy. Rustin served as personal assistant to Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King\, Jr.\, and as an organizer of the 1963 March on Washington. Some religious leaders did not want Rustin in the foreground because he was a gay man\, and they believed his sexuality would hinder the progress of the Civil Rights movement. Rustin’s story is more relevant than ever\, particularly against the backdrop of both Charlotte’s recent history and the unrest sweeping the nation. One Voice is honored to perform the Southeastern premiere of this work\, and to tell this powerful and important story.
