Gurss Named Unsung Hero

The work of a chorus’s artistic director is often challenging, and the recognition is rarely proportional to the long hours and creative energy that go into the job. So when One Voice’s artistic director, Gerald Gurss, received the Unsung Hero Award from the Gay Men’s Chorus of Charlotte (GMCC) this spring, we were elated!

Each year at their black-tie “Forte!” event, the GMCC bestows the Unsung Hero Award to a person or organization who has worked diligently for Charlotte’s LGBTQ community, making a significant impact primarily from behind the scenes. Past winners have included St. Martin’s Episcopal Church for its longstanding commitment to social justice for LGBTQ people, Ann Hooper for raising more than $200,000 for a host of LGBT organizations over the years and Clay Smith for his years of service to the LGBTQ community on the entertainment scene and at pride festivities. According to the GMCC, the decision to honor Gerald this spring was unanimous!

“boundless energy and drive”

Says GMCC’s artistic director John Quillin, “Gerald is a tremendous, community-minded collaborator and partner. He’s eager to see things change for the entire community, not just One Voice.”

The announcement honoring Gerald puts it this way: “Gerald’s energy and passion for the work he does flows constantly, and he takes every opportunity to speak, share and promote his love of the chorus and its mission of greater LGBTQ awareness and inclusion. His passion translates into boundless energy and drive… and he has a ‘no fear’ approach to speaking with anyone, anywhere about the work he does and how they can get involved.”

Says Quillin, “Gerald’s artistic vision is inspiring and engaging. Under his leadership One Voice’s impact in the community has grown tremendously. He understands the power of the music and he welds it effectively.”

We couldn’t agree more! Please join us in congratulating “Unsung Hero” Gerald Gurss on this well-deserved honor.
