Grateful for Grants

One Voice is the proud recipient of two grants from the Charlotte Lesbian & Gay Fund and one from Charlotte’s Arts & Science Council for our 2014/15 concert season. These funds will help us with mount a 25th-anniversary concert season to remember!

The Charlotte Lesbian and Gay Fund awarded the chorus an operating grant of $7,700 that will help us keep our music and mission going strong in 2015. We’re honored to be one of the ten organizations to receive this type of support from The Fund this year.

A groundbreaking project…

The second grant from the Charlotte Lesbian and Gay Fund is to undertake a special project geared toward families and children in the region. A groundbreaking endeavor in Charlotte, the chorus’s small ensemble, Sotto Voce, will partner with Charlotte Mecklenburg Public Libraries to perform a musical setting of Tomie dePaola’s children’s story, Oliver Button is a Sissy.

This 45-minute program for young children and their families will engage children with music to help them celebrate their own differences, embrace the unique qualities of their friends and counter bullying that so often begins even in elementary school. The story provides a model for how young kids can cope with bullying and support their friends who may be teased or harassed for expressing themselves outside cultural gender norms. We plan for the program to be offered at least 3 times–once at ImaginOn‘s theatre and twice at regional branches of the library so that we are reaching into different communities within the county.

Meanwhile, the Arts and Science Council awarded One Voice a grant to help us produce this year’s holiday show that will kick off the chorus’s 25th anniversary season. Stay tuned for more information about this concert and the entire anniversary season!
